Whispering to my outcast
self-sounding is more like pending death.
My body detaching from myself,
numbed by winter's fingers.
I creak up these outside stairs
to my apartment after an all-night drunk,
cheap Tesco's Windsor Castle
London Dry Gin—on the rocks.
I thought of Jesus
how He must have felt
during His resurrection
dragging His holy body
up that endless stairwell
spiraling toward heaven.

THE DANCE OF THE BIRCH TREES
The naked white birch trees
Stand close to each other,
Waiting for the music
Of the Dreisam Valley wind
To begin.
A gust comes,
Followed by another,
Making the trees sway,
Like a wise white woman's long tresses,
The thin, supple twigs
That almost reach half the size of the trees,
Have a faster rhythm of their own.
The hurricane-like wind
Gathers its energy for the finale.
Ah, the upper branches
With capillary-like twigs,
As they anastomose,
Developing into a canopy,
Become intensive
In their movements to and fro.
In the background you see
The blue Black Forest hills,
With homesteads like dots
On the snow-covered hillsides,
That are lit now.
The bluish-grey clouds which were on the move,
Have taken a Prussian blue hue.
A weak yellowish light,
Manages to break through,
Above the snowy-clad peaks.
A semblance of a sunset
In the Schwarzwald.

Yi Sha, real name Wu Wenjian, born in Chengdu, Sichuan, in 1966, is a poet, writer, critic, translator, and compiler. He has graduated from the department of Chinese language and literature of Beijing Normal University in 1989. Now he teaches in the Chinese Institute of Xi’an International Studies University. He has published more than 100 written, translated and edited books and won the Henry Ruth Foundation Awards for Chinese Poetry Creation and English Translation, the Asian Poet Awards of South Korea, and dozens of poetry awards of China. His works have been highly valued by many countries around the world. The Vermont Creation Center in the United States has employed him as a resident writer, the University of Arizona in the United States has held poems reading for him, and one journal and two universities in Austria has also held poems reading and seminars for him. He published Chinese-English poetry collection “A Collection Of Birds Singing” in 2023, Chinese to English translated by Sophy Chen, and co-published in 14 nations by Sophy International Translation Publishing House.
