Sophy Chen, Lihua Chen, born in Lueyang, Hanzhong, Shannxi Province, China, is the Chinese contemporary poet, translator, publisher and world poetry manager. She graduated from English Institute of Xi’an International Studies University in English Literature. For the first time I read the poems of Dazang Chen on March 2011. By a chance I was fortunate to read the poems of him. At that time it was really abstract to me to read the poems of him and it would take a lot of my brain cells, but I seemed to find a new continent and read it again and again. I was moved by one of the his poems. In such a pure material world from childhood I discovered what we saw and what we hear had almost had nothing to do with poetry at that time and poetry seemed to be the thing of ancient people and it seemed to be extinct in the real world in which I lived, at least there were no poems around me, let alone poets. The poems of Dazang Chen awakened me. The poet is not extinct. They are hidden in us ...
The poems of Dazang Chen deeply moved me, and also pulled into our distance, let us know and understand each other! Everything that follows is because of this poem. It all comes from the origin of this poem.

But not for being profaned; in front of you

In your glory, let me hear for you

To reject me just as to reject a medieval myth

In the blank of life, none of a figure
Would be so close to you — my wandering soul

Real love is the love that two people love each other and admire each other. To love someone is like cherishing a rare treasure. You pour all your emotions and love to take care of it, but not only to play and possess it because love is the thing of two people, the unilateral play and possession will bring pain to each other. Therefore, the poet said: If I love you, I will never try to possess you, because I love you, I will pour all my body and soul on you, let my soul feel your soul and love you in my soul. When I read these words in the poem here in that year, besides being moved, I was speechless. I was thinking in my mind it was too deep. In such a world, some people were still pursuing such a love? Maybe your life is filled full, maybe there is a blank space. In the blankness of your life, there may be a lot of people’s shadows, but they are far away from you. Only my figure is closest to you and it is clearly visible in your memory. How confident the poet is, he will definitely become the only permanent figure in the heart of the one he loves. It is just as the poet Dazang Chen said: “In the blank of life, none of a figure would be so close to you”. My soul has been wandering and desultory wandering. Since the first translation of this poem on November 18, 2014, it has been revised third time by Sophy Chen, on September 19, 2015, January 27, 2021, and May 30, 2023. After nearly ten years of translation span, from the hazy understanding of the original Chinese text of this poem I have a thorough understanding of it and also have a new understanding and interpretation of it and English translation text has also been further refined and optimized.
Because of this poem. Because I read this poem, I could not forgot it. I started reading a lot of Chinese Modern Poems. I have also recovered the passion of writing Chinese Modern Poems. Maybe because of learning foreign languages like challenging strangeness, maybe it is the profound attraction of poems of Dazang Chen, I still more felt the translation of Chinese Modern Poetry, especially the Chinese to English has the huge challenges and life significance. In the process of repeated reading of poems of Dazang Chen, I’ve had a strong impulse to translate them. After giving English classes to my students, in my free time, I started to translate Chinese Modern Poems, especially poems of Dazang Chen. Since 2011, some of his poems have been translated, even if they have not been published till now. Up to the present, I will finish all poems translation of the Chinese 14 Lines Poems collection The Elegy of the Lyre by Dazang Chen. This poetry collection can be translated, and everything is due to this poem.
On the occasion of the translation and publication of The Elegy of the Lyre by Dazang Chen, there are too many things to write in my translation foreword and there are too many moving poems in this poetry collection. But in the early summer of Guangzhou, there is no wind in the scorching sun and there is no wind so living in Guangzhou is like living in a steamer every day. I am also a person who is afraid of air conditioning and then sweating all day. In such a hot day, if there are some ice cubes to lower the heat, it will be very better, but I can not eat too much ice cream. Just try some iced lychee, or something else, ok, we can cool down the heat by poems of Dazang Chen ! And then I just continue to translate Dazang Chen’s Chinese 14 Lines Poems poetry collection, The Elegy Of The Lyre. Some poems in this poetry collection have been translated from 2011 to so far. It is the poetry collection translated by me in the most time span. The biggest image of Dazang Chen’s Chinese 14 Lines Poems is snow, snow rainbow, paradise.....it is painful and sad to read but the sadness is beautiful, just like the beauty and sadness of first love. In this hot summer, to read the poems of Dazang Chen and translate the poems of him, it makes people relive the beauty and sorrow of the first love, the flying snowflakes, and the dreamy snow rainbow... it is just right to low the heat!

苏菲（Sophy Chen），本名陈丽华，中国当代诗人、翻译家、出版人、世界诗歌活动策划人。生于陕西汉中略阳；毕业于西安外国语大学英文学院。“苏菲国际翻译出版社”社长、“苏菲世界诗歌奖”创始人、“苏菲世界诗歌博物馆”馆长、《苏菲译-世界诗歌年鉴2021卷》(汉英对照)主编、《苏菲诗歌&翻译》(英汉）纸质世界诗刊主编、“苏菲诗歌&世界翻译网”主编。PENTASI B 世界诗歌联谊会行政管理、中国翻译协会会员、卡萨克斯坦“世界各民族作家联盟”会员、意大利“聂鲁达文学协会”名誉会员、意大利“帕那苏斯诗歌奖”评审委员会成员、意大利“卢修斯·阿纳乌斯·塞内卡”艺术与哲学学院 驻华大使。1989年开始汉语诗歌写作、2004年开始英语诗歌写作、2005年开始英汉双语诗歌翻译。

Pentasi B 2019 中国世界诗歌节&苏菲世界诗歌奖，世界诗人图书展/艺术品捐赠仪式，作为此次诗歌节的一部分，共现场展出350多位来自中国和全球诗人的诗歌选集和期刊350多部以及部分书画作品。除了苏菲世界诗歌博物馆珍藏以外，诗人的部分诗选同时捐赠给了中国国家图书馆和西安外国语大学图书馆。此次世界图书展给诗人作品提供了良好的世界展示平台，为世界诗人找到了诗歌诗意的栖息地。
Exhibition & Donation Ceremony of World Poets' Books & Art Works as part of the 2019 Pentasi B China World Poetry Festival & Sophy Chen World Poetry Awards, it exhibited more than 350 poetry anthologies, periodicals, works and some paintings and calligraphy works by Chinese and foreign poets, from more than 350 Chinese and global poets. In addition to be collected by Sophy Chen World Poetry Museum, books of some poets were donated to National Library of China and Library of Xi’an International Studies University. The world books exhibition provides a good platform for poets to display their works in the world and also find a poetic habitat for poets of the world.
At the time when the 2023 Pentasi B China World Poetry Festival & Sophy Chen World Poetry Awards are approaching, in order to be able to do a little practical work for poets and writers all over of the world, we will give everyone a feast of Chinese and foreign books. And to further highlight the world specifications and international poetry festival standards of this poetry festival, an art exhibition/donation ceremony of works by Chinese and foreign poets will be held during the events. Books/Art Works Exhibition/Donation Of Chinese & Foreign Poets as part of the 2021 Pentasi B China World Poetry Festival & Sophy Chen World Poetry Awards, it will continue to exhibit and donate the excellent poetry works and art works of poets from all over of the world onsite. In addition to be collected by Sophy Chen World Poetry Museum, we will try our best to send your works to the National Library of China and Chinese university libraries with the intention of cooperation as well as overseas famous poets and libraries.

About Sophy Chen
Sophy Chen, her name, Lihua and family name, Chen, born in Lueyang, Hanzhong, Shannxi Province, China, is the Chinese contemporary poet, translator, publisher and poetry manager.
She graduated from English Institute of Xi’an International Studies University in English Literature. She is the founder of Sophy Chen World Poetry Award, the President of Sophy International Translation Publishing House, Sophy Chen World Poetry Museum, the Chief Editor of Sophy Poetry & Translation(C-E) World Poetry Paper Magazine, and Sophy Poetry & World Translation Website. Sophy Chen is Admin Of PENTASI B World Friendship Poetry, a Member of the Translators Association of China, a Member of the World Nations Writers Union, Kazakhstan, and its Chairman's Chinese Literaturre & Translation Consultant. Sophy Chen is appointed as a Honorary Membership of PABLO NERUDA ASSOCIAZIONE CULTURALE in 2019 and Jury Of “Il Parnaso - Angelo La Vecchia Award” of Italy.
She began to write Chinese poetry in 1989 and English poetry in 2004, and translate Chinese Poetry into English poetry and English poetry into Chinese poetry in 2005.
In 2012 she won the annual International Best Translator Award issued by IPTRC. In the same year, she received the Legendary Poet Award from the famous international English poetry website (poetry.com). In 2014 she won the Chinese Contemporary Poetry Translation Award (2013-2014). In 2018 she won Pentasi B World Featured Poet and Pentasi B World Inspirational Poet; the International Icon of Literature of Mewadev Laurel Award in India; In 2019 she won Neruda Award of Italy; the Wrangal’s Golden Peacock Award, Pentasi B Pentasian Award, Pentasi B World Poet Laureate Award and Pentasi B World Golden Voice Poetry 2019 and 2019 “Il Parnaso - Angelo La Vecchia Award” of Italy.
She translated and published seven collections of Chinese poems into English: The Flower Swaying (2014) by Zhao Xingzhong; Tibetan Incense (2014) by ZiYing; The Outlook of Life (2014) by Yang Ruopeng; Different Tunes (2014) by Greensleeves; The Body Forward (2015) by the painter TanJun, A Poetry Biography for White Snake by Liao Shidie and I Find Your Beauty In The Taste Of Your Eyes by Chen Hui (Taste’s Eyes) (2019)
She published an English poetry collection, Sophy English Sonnets, Tuberose (2018). She translated, edited and published Poetry Selection Of PENTASI B 2019 China World Poetry Festival & Sophy Chen World Poetry Awards (2019) and Sophy Poetry & Translation (C-E) World Poetry Paper Magazine. Sophy Chen, Lihua Chen, born in Lueyang, Hanzhong, Shannxi Province, China, is the Chinese contemporary poet, translator, publisher and world poetry manager. She graduated from English Institute of Xi’an International Studies University in English Literature. Poetry functions creatively in the collective memory of nations. The Father of Poetry in the western world is recognized as Homer, the author of the Iliad and the Odyssey while the Mother of Poetry or the Tenth Muse in ancient Greek poetry is the poetess Sappho.
To celebrate the launching of Sophy Chen’s Translation of the World Poetry Yearbook 2021, it is as if we had been joined by the presence of both Homer and Sappho, who have so much in common with the World Poetry Yearbook 2021.
Homer was the international star of his day, circa 1.000- 800 BC, visiting the city states of Ancient Greece reciting his poems by heart. We can imagine the hours and days spent on the road and how he enthralled his audiences and crowds of listeners., hearing the Iliad for the very first time. His main theme was a campaign against war led by the Iliad, and then contrasting the value placed on family life with the Odyssey. With these two works Homer transformed Poetry making it a true lesson for the citizens of the then known world. He truly became the Father of Poetry, writing and composing in a unique idiom and with a unique style built on the unrivalled quality of Ancient Greek at a level not previously experienced. This presupposes that Poetry was cultivated before him but not to the outstanding extend that Homer built it up.
This is the parallel between Homer and Sophy Chen’s Translation of the World Poetry Yearbook 2021. Sophy’s is a Poetry Anthology of 691 poets translated into Chinese or English, from 63 national dialects. The magnitude of this poetic work addresses the world in its two most powerful languages, Chinese and English. This is a mega task with the the world speaking poetry and addressing the main issues of todays’ world which can be summarized as Love and Peace. Climate change now hangs over mankind, like a sword of Damoclese . Poetry has become more relevant than at any time in human history.
The other visitor to this mega event organized by Sophy Chen, should of course be Sappho who introduced and composed lyrical poetry. This gave women an opportunity for the first time, to speak up for themselves after long years of war. Sapho also gave a clear message to the women of her time ‘Women exist too’, and are a vital part of society. Female affection contrasted strongly with the deeds of male heroes in the Trojan Wars.
The Translation of Sophy Chen’s World Poetry Yearbook 2021 sets new standards in Poetry as both Homer and Sappho did in classical times. Her inspiration sets a new landmark with translations from 691 poets. She employs new ways of presenting poetry to the world. Both Homer and Sappho, as Poetry’s representatives from classical times would be honoured to be mentioned in this presentation of Sophy Chen’s Translation of the World Poetry Yearbook 2021.

Roula Pollard is a Greek inspirational poet, writer, essayist, translator and literary promoter.
